Who Are Bedwetters?
Bed wetting is a
problem that affects nearly 20 million Americans. Bedwetters
are (at any one time)...
- One of every 4 five-year-olds.
- One of every 10 six-year-olds.
- One of every 14 seven-year-olds.
- One of every 20 eight-year-olds.
- One of every 33 ten-year-olds.
- One of every 50 seventeen-year-olds.
- One of every 100 adults.
Enuresis is more
prevalent among boys than girls.
What Causes
Bed-Wetting?
Most children naturally outgrow bed
wetting by the age of three or four. If a child is still bed wetting
by the age of five, then it is likely that there is a problem.
Over 90% of bed wetting results from an inherited sleep
disorder. This causes a state of sleep that is so deep that
the signal to the brain that the bladder is full is
insufficient to arouse them from their sleep. Therefore, they
wet the bed.
This is not a condition that is within
the conscious control of the child. Thus, punishment and
rewards are not effective means to eliminate bedwetting.
As a bed wetting child ages, the chances of outgrowing
this condition naturally are less and less. Even if a child
does outgrow bed wetting the psychological price s/he pays in
low self-esteem, embarrassment, and adjustment difficulties in
the meantime may be very high.
Only about 5% of all
bed wetting cases are caused by an organic or psychological
problem.
What Are the Results of
Bed Wetting?
Obviously, there is the ongoing
problem of cleaning laundry and bedclothes. More importantly,
the child and the family unit are under increasing stress as
the problem continues, for example:
- Added expenses
- Restricted activities, e.g. no overnights
- Family upsets
- Difficult psychological growth and adjustment for the
child
- Child abuse (there is a strong correlation between bed
wetting and abusive situations)
- Criminal behavior (more than 70% of violent offenders
were bed wetters in one study)
