THE
HISTORY OF HARGITT HOUSE FOUNDATION
My career in healing enuretic children
began 25 years ago. This
is the beginning, which has led us to where we are today.
Having many obstacles we are proud of what we have
accomplished. My mentor was psychiatrist Jay Shurley M.D. noted for his
premier research on sleep disorders, an area he pioneered. He discovered, among others, that bed wetting is a sleep
disorder. This
has been confirmed from parent response at 99%… “yes”
my child is a deep sleeper”.
I was fortunate in becoming involved in a
clinic operation of which Dr. Shurley was president.
It was unfortunate the clinic was closed after a three
year period. Insurance
would not pay for treatment, the silent shame of bed wetting
played its part, insufficient funds, etc.
Shortly before closing we received a
blessing! The
editorial assistant for Ann Landers called asking permission
to list the clinic as a reliable source for correcting
bedwetting. My
immediate response was, “Yes.”
With borrowed funds, with great effort the changes were
made to convert the treatment into an in-home treatment
program. We
completed the changes and were ready within our two-month
deadline. We had
over 7000 responses! It
was unbelievable! We
changed the lives of many children: More
recently, we were endorsed by Dr. T. Berry Brazelton in his
syndicated column. It
was equally successful. We
are extremely appreciative of their support.
At this point we feel secure in our
future. We have
earned our stars has having the finest, the most unique drug
free treatment available today.
Our average cure time is 8 weeks, when all directions
are followed. Once
declared dry, they remain dry!
We never have notice of a recurrence, although
provisions are provided in our contract.
Our future plans:
We have developed a data bank over the years as to the child
abuse/bed wetting connection.
In our research we have not found one organization
working with abused children who recognized bedwetting as a
risk factor. We
cannot effectively help abused children without taking
bedwetting into consideration.
Quotes taken from our files:
From Psychiatrist Jay Shurley, M.D.:
“Enuresis is no respecter of persons.
You find it in all levels of society, poverty to
palaces. One
study showed that one out of every one hundred and fifty
military recruits was a bed wetter.
In another study of people in prison for violent crime,
an astonishing seventy percent had been enuretics as children.
An tremendously high percent of abused children are
enuretics.”
Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota: “Millions of children live this silent shame.
For many individuals social problems arising from
enuresis are most damaging and long lasting; the beginnings of
a lonely childhood often extending into adulthood.”
District Judge, Scott McCown, Austin,
Texas: “These abused children are either going to fund our
Social Security or fill our prisons.
It all depends on how we respond to their needs as
children.”
