What Causes
Bed-Wetting?
Most children naturally outgrow bed
wetting by the age of three. If a child is still bed wetting
by the age of five, then it is likely that there is a problem.
Over 90% of bed wetting results from an inherited sleep
disorder. This causes a state of sleep that is so deep that
the signal to the brain that the bladder is full is
insufficient to arouse them from their sleep. Therefore, they
wet the bed.
This is not a condition that is within
the conscious control of the child. Thus, punishment and
rewards are not effective means to eliminate bedwetting.
As a bed wetting child ages, the chances of outgrowing
this condition naturally are less and less. Even if a child
does outgrow bedwetting, the psychological price s/he pays in
low self-esteem, embarrassment, and adjustment difficulties in
the meantime may be very high.
Only about 5% of all
bedwetting cases are caused by an organic or psychological
problem.
