There
are many "solutions"
It is most important to match
the solution to the cause of the bed wetting. Otherwise the
bed wetting is not solved, and the child and family suffer
additional disappointment.
ree in home treatment program with
counseling for bedwetting solutions. Authorized by Dr. T.
Berry Brazelton M.D. Here are some typical
solutions to bed wetting and their results:
Alarms - these wake the child when moisture is
sensed, i.e. after the bed is wet. They are an external source
waking the child after the bed wetting happens. This does not
stimulate the development of internal controls that the child
needs. These fail because they do not address the main cause
of bed wetting - a sleep disorder. For example, many children
are such deep sleepers that they sleep right through the
alarm. They range in cost from $50 to more than $300.
Drug therapy - this is often the first thing
parents try after a trip to the doctor. Drug therapy can be
successful if the cause of the bedwetting is organic. About
5-10% of bedwetting cases will respond to drug treatment. Cost
is typically less than $100 and covered by medical insurance.
Manuals/kits - these are usually instructions
of various kinds that may or may not address the sleep
disorder causing bedwetting. They vary widely in effectiveness
and price (from $300 to more than $1,900.) These "solutions"
typically expect the parent to understand how to implement the
techniques and lack personal attention and feedback. One key
to look for is if they offer a satisfaction guarantee. Without
that guarantee, you are risking losing your money as well as
failing to help your child.
Rewards and
punishments - these perhaps are the most misunderstood
techniques. Because the root cause of bedwetting is not within
the conscious control of the child, rewards and punishments
will have little effect.
Withholding drinks at
bedtime - most parents have tried this technique. It is
ineffective because the body continues to make urine overnight
even without the nighttime water intake. This results in a
full bladder and bedwetting.
Waking your child in
the middle of the night to urinate - in addition to
exhausting the parent, this technique fails because it relies
upon an external source to arouse the sleeping child. This
does not promote the development of internal controls. It may
be effective on a night to night basis, but once the parent
stops waking the child, the bedwetting continues.
